Bachelor Of Arts In Community Development
Description of the Programme:
The Bachelor of Arts in Community Development programme is aimed at equipping
students with relevant theoretical knowledge and practical skills for holistic community
development. This is achieved through emphasizing research on contemporary development
issues and how this research can inform our practice. Basic to this programme is the
understanding that to be truly transformational, community development interventions
must be holistic, involving all aspects of community life: social, spiritual, economic
and political. Students will be equipped to integrate all these aspects of society so as
to model community development for holistic transformation of society.
Programme Rationale
This programme is intended to raise development practitioners who through dynamic
leadership will mobilise communities, create awareness and set an agenda for development
that is holistic, equitable and sustainable. These leaders will spearhead change in
communities by empowering people to recognize their potential and utilize it in ways that
bring about transformation. Although the subject of transforming society has dominated the
development agendas of many African countries since independence, success remains elusive.
Poverty has become endemic and Africa’s hope for a brighter future is under threat.
Therefore, a more concerted approach to community transformation, one that focuses on
empowering people themselves to become agents of the change they want is our greatest hope.
