Master of Arts in Theological Studies

Program Description

This is a two-year graduate degree designed to provide a theological exploration of God and his redemptive agenda for the world and the role that humans play in it. The programme provides an interdisciplinary knowledge of theological, biblical, social science, and ministry studies intended to equip academics and practitioners whose character, academic discipline and motivation for ministry are informed by faith in God.
Four tracks are available for students to pursue:
a) Theological studies track,
b) Christian Leadership track,
c) Church planting track and,
d) Community development track.
The goal of the Master of Arts in Theological Studies (MATS) is to equip academics and practitioners with appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes that shape their personality and capacity to provide effective and transforming leadership in the church, faith-based organizations, and the wider marketplace with the aim of bringing gospel-led transformation to the communities and nations.

The influence of Christianity in the African continent continues to rise with conversions increasing every year. The challenge however is that Christianity lacks sufficient professional and effective leaders who are trained to provide leadership at the levels where Christian influence is critical. The MATS programme is therefore designed to meet this need by equipping Christian leaders with sound biblical and theological training to minister
effectively in these spheres of influence.

Programme Objectives
1. Cultivate a Christ-like character in leadership which incorporates practical theological reflection on worship, teaching, biblical interpretation and preaching, pastoral care, administration, and social ministries.
2. Articulate ways in which theological reflection and application serve the ongoing life of the Church, and society.
3. Demonstrate Christian maturity through an ethical conduct that shows respect for cultural diversity, commitment to lifelong learning and transformation in the Christian faith.
4. Employ sound, disciplined, and appropriate methods to interpret scripture theologically and apply it with adherence to the biblical texts.
5. Demonstrate proficiency to direct people, resources and programs necessary for the effective transformation of individuals and communities.
6. Exhibit the knowledge and skills necessary for the effective communication of biblical truth.
